Description
In very good condition. This is a Top-Quality CD of 535 train order images from the Fort Worth & Denver Railway, previously named the Fort Worth & Denver City Railroad. Included are two station lists showing each location and the number of orders copied at that location.Also included is a small timetable compendium, containing 5 different timetables, both employee and public, that cover the FWD in its entirety, and part of the C&S also. They are:
BN-FWD Fort Worth Div. #1 4-4-1982 22 pages;
C&S-FWD System public timetable dated January 22, 1967 This is possibly the last public timetable for this Railroad, as the last run of the Texas Zephyr was 9-11-1967. 4 pages;
C&S-FWD Wichita Falls Div. #1 9-15-1963 6 pages;
CRI&P-FWD Joint Texas Div. #7 (Joint Line) 10-27-1963 6 pages; and
FWD Wichita Falls Div. #5 6-1-1967 9 pages. Total 59 pages of timetable information.
These timetables cover all of this territory, so you can see where each location was, with respect to the others. The BN-FWD Fort Worth Div. #1 ETT from 1982 could be the very last timetable issued under the FW&D subheader, as the FW&D was fully merged into Burlington Northern in late 1982. This was a very strategic piece of main-line Railroad, and the FW&D was all train-order territory until the advent of track warrants, around 1986.
There are 51 different locations represented here, with at least one train order image from each location. Ages of the orders range from 1933 to 1982. This is very comprehensive coverage of this line operations-wise. All of the FW&D was single track, even though parts of it CTC'd in later years. After CTC was installed, train orders from all intermediate points became very rare, account there were very few instances where one of these locations would put out an order, due to CTC and radio communication.
In the late 1930s, the FW&D started using Burlington Lines train order forms, as the FW&D was a subsidiary of the CB&Q. When Burlington Northern took over in 1970, BN forms started showing up, and were used up until 1982 and beyond, when the FWD was fully merged into Burlington Northern.
There are a couple of orders on Burlington-Rock Island forms included from Tomball, Texas in this CD. They are on actual BRI forms and are very rare. Up until the Rock Island went out of business in 1980, there were plenty of Rock Island trains that used the Joint Line south of Fort Worth, along with FW&D trains. Thus, the line was called the Burlington-Rock Island Railroad, commonly known now as the Joint Line.
On March 3, 1970, the CB&Q was merged into Burlington Northern, but the FW&D, and the C&S as well, maintained their separate identities until the early 1980's, when finally officially merged into Burlington Northern. All of the FW&D orders in this CD are bona-fide FW&D orders, regardless of the train order form that was used. The FW&D started using CB&Q forms in the 1930s, and BN forms in the 1970s. Orders on actual Fort Worth & Denver forms are very rare items indeed.
In its original form, the FW&D comprised all trackage south of Texline, Texas clear down to Galveston on the Gulf Of Mexico. Everything north of Texline was C&S. Texline used the same train order forms, with no distinction as to what Railroad it was, other than the fact just described here.
The MKT (Katy) Railroad used the FW&D trackage from Wichita Falls to Fort Worth, and also on the branch line out to Stanford. A few orders to KATY trains are included here.
There is even a Q form somewhere with a circular cigarette burn in the middle of the order. A far cry from now, where smoking on any train is an offense a guy could get fired over.
The 12 pictures shown are just a sampling of the quantity and variety of locations, engine numbers (a few steam) and other operations unique to this very well-traveled piece of Railroad.
The orders in this CD shows many operators' names, track conditions, operating procedures, and many meets and flag orders, all consistent with train-order operation. Even during CTC times, orders were still required as slow orders. This is some of the best Railroad reading anywhere.
Very nice items that are obsolete and no longer used by any Railroad.
